Summary. Studies in order to select new source material for potato breeding were carried out in 2010-2014 at N.I. Vavilov Institute of Plant Genetic Resources. The study included 320 samples of breeding varieties, wild and cultivated species from potato world collection of VIR. An integrated ecological and geographical screening, including filed and laboratory evaluation of samples for the main commercial and agronomic traits, were carried out on the experimental fields and at laboratories of VIR near St. Petersburg and its branches, located in different soil-climatic zones (Murmansk and Tambov regions), in order to assess the adaptive capacity of potato species and varieties in expression of their valuable traits. To achieve this purpose we studied potato samples on early ripening, productivity, starch content in tubers, resistance to late blight and golden nematode of potato. In earliness, the varieties that exceed by 10-50 % the standard variety Hibinsky Ranny on the dynamics of tuber mass accumulation and final yield indicators were selected. Among these varieties those samples are the most valuable, which combine earliness with low sensitivity to late blight (17 varieties) and to golden nematode of potato (22 varieties). On high productivity we selected 52 varieties of domestic and foreign breeding, exceeding indicators of the standard variety Nevsky by 10-65 %. According to high starch content we marked out 36 varieties as potential sources for breeding on this trait. Carried out field and laboratory screening of 72 samples of 36 wild species of potato for the resistance to golden nematode of potato against the artificially infected background enabled to select 23 sources of high resistance to the parasite. The singled out sources of valuable traits are recommended for use in breeding.
