Summary. Twenty two lines of flax from genetic collection of VIR with different origin and photosensitivity were grown in pots under conditions of natural long (19 hours) and artificial short (12 hours) day in Leningrad region. During three years of the research 27 studied characteristics formed two groups. The first one had two centers: plant height (total, technical, and height to the first ball; r = 0.82…0.99) and the thickness of the stem (lower, middle and upper diameters; r = 0.47…0.96). The second group included the characteristics of cross sections of fiber bundles in stems: their length, width and area, as well as the length, width and thickness of the cell wall of the elementary fibers (r = 0.39…1.00). The degree of the inflorescence branching, shape of stem, length of the phases of vegetation period and the number of leaves in different variants of the experiment correlated between each other and with the height and thickness of stem to a variable extent. The duration of a day had no significant effect on the system of traits correlations. The similarity of correlations matrixes in all variants of the experiment was 0.67…0.89. The coefficient of photosensitivity correlated only sometimes with other characteristics (r = -0.68…0.80). This indicates the principle possibility of combining the low photosensitivity and optimal agronomic traits in one variety. According to the variance analysis only some paired correlations were significantly dependent on photoperiod. The flowering time was more strongly correlated with total plant height under long day conditions (the portion of influence was 90 %). The correlations between some characters of height and thickness of the stem were on average higher under long day conditions and in some cases depended significantly on the photoperiod. Described rigid connections between the characters should be considered in breeding.
