Summary. The article presents the results of biochemical and field screening of 268 samples of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) from VIR collection of various ecological and geographical origins. The purpose of the work was to select source material for breeding of samples with high or stable content of protein in seeds and to reveal patterns of variability of protein content in seeds at the samples characterized by different morphological and economically valuable signs under different cultivation conditions. Various sets of samples were grown up on Astrakhan and Crimea experimental stations of VIR, as well as on fields of Pushkin branch of VIR in 2000-2012. The field investigation of economic signs was carried out by the method of VIR. The protein content was determined using the Kjeldahal method by Kjeltec Auto 1030 Analyzer (Sweden). The statistical analysis (correlation analysis, one-factor analysis, multifactor analysis of variance) was performed in program Statistica 7.0 (StatSoft, Inc., USA). The average content of protein in seeds varied depending on the origin and the year of study. As a result of screening 32 sources of high protein content (above 28 %) and 7 sources of stable protein content (26.0…27.6 %) were selected. The correlation coefficients were unstable from year to year and it was not possible to reveal stable dependencies between protein formation in bean sees and meteorological conditions (–0.88 ≤ r ≤ 0.90), morphological (–0.53 ≤ r ≤ 0.66) and economically valuable (–0.42 ≤ r ≤ 0.60) signs. The multifactor analysis of variance revealed that the protein content more depends on genetic properties of plants (the influence share is 50.6 %), less depends on weather conditions (6.0…18.9 %) and to a little degree is influenced by the place of reproduction (0.8 %).
