Summary. Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) fiber is one of the most important raw materials for the textile industry. The aim of the investigation was to develop early ripening varieties with white fiber of the 4th-5th types and lines with naturally colored fiber suitable for growing in Russia. The work is carried out in three locations of the South of Russia: Prikumskaya experimental breeding station (PEBS) of Stavropol Research Institute of Agriculture (SRIA), Budennovsk, Stavropol Krai; Caspian Research Institute of Arid Agriculture (CRIAA), Astrakhan region, Solenoe Zaymishche; Astrakhan research station of VIR, Astrakhan region, Kamyzyak district. In Budennovsk the cotton was grown up under dry conditions, in Astrakhan region – with irrigation (3-5 times during the season).. Most these varieties have fiber of the 4th-5th type, and POSS 5 – the 3d-4th type. This variety was grown without irrigation, and fiber length correlates positively with moisture presence. Samples and lines (CRIAA) with fiber of the 3d-4th types and characteristics combination close to the optimal one have already involved into breeding process. These forms are Zhuanshan 10 (Chinese), UZN-8 (Uzbekistan), С6 CV 73 86 S5-17 (Albania), SS1/1 и SS3/3 (Italy), L13, L26, 47/1, 45/3 (Russia). The average productivity of samples SS3/3, С6 CV 73 86 S5-17 exceeded 4 t/ha on the experimental plot for 3 years. Among the lines with colored fiber the line 6C has the best characteristics. It was developed from the combination C2 (Albania) x Genetic-34 (Turkmenistan, brown fiber). Plants of this line form fiber of the 4th-5th type, productivity 2.0-2.5 t/ha and fiber output 35 %.
