Summary. The aim of the work was to compare the metabolic state in first-calf cows at different levels of depression of the ovarian function during the first third of the lactation. The objects of the investigation were eighty two cows of the Black-and-White Holstein breed. Experiments were carried out from February to April 2015 in OOO “Mikhajlovskoye”, Belgorod region. The cows were divided into three groups according to the ovarian functional state, which was assessed by the rectal palpation technique and with the use of an ultrasound scanner. Animals restored the sexual cyclicity were included in the first group. Cows of the second and third groups did not express signs of rut after the forty fifth day of the lactation. Animals with ovaries containing one or several medium-sized follicles (no more than 8 mm) in the absence of yellow bodies were included in the second group (the moderate level of the depression of the ovarian function). The third group included cows with the profound level of the depression of the ovarian function that was confirmed by a decrease in the size of both ovaries containing no yellow bodies as well as follicles bigger than 4 mm in diameter. In animals of the second group the content of total protein and its globulin fraction in the blood was lower (by 7 and 11%, respectively) than in animals with normal sexual cycles. At the same time a considerable reduction in concentrations of albumins (by 5%), total cholesterol (by 14%), and phospholipids (by 9%) was found in the blood of cows of the third group as compared to the cows restored sexual cycles. Meanwhile, there were significant differences in many metabolic relationships between animals of three compared groups. Thus, the metabolic states in first-calf cows with profound and moderate levels of depression of the ovarian function differ, suggesting distinctions in regulatory pathways connecting the metabolic and reproductive systems at different forms of the anovulatory state.

Keywords: high-productive cows, depression of the ovarian functional activity, metabolism.
