Summary. Barley is a multiple-use crop. The acreage of this crop in Russia lately stabilized at 8-9 m ha. In Krasnodar region spring barley is very important safety crop which is widely used for complementary seeding and reseeding of winter cereal crops if they were damaged or lost during the severe winter. In such years the acreage of spring barley increases up to 105,000-145,000 ha. As a result of integration of crossbreeding and mutagenesis, selection of parental pairs by morphologic and biologic divergence and ecologic-geographical segregation, in the Krasnodar Research Institute of Agriculture for the whole period of breeding (since 1922) 20 varieties were developed, 11 of them were included into State register. The new achievement is high-productive multiple-row loose-eared barley variety Bogatyr, allowed for use since 2015. The pedigree of the variety includes samples of spring two-row (var. nutans) barley and multiple-row (var. pallidum) barley, belonging to the West-European and North-American ecological groups: winter barley variety Tsyklon (var. paralellum) and spring breeding material of hybrid and mutant origins of the Krasnodar Research Institute of Agriculture. Over 6 years of examination on the fields of the Institution, the yield was 3.39 t/ha, which is 5.9% higher than in the standard. At the North-Kuban Agricultural Experimental Station in the north of Krasnodar region the average yield of the Bogatyr variety had exceeded the standard Vikont by 210 kg/ha. In terms of the vegetation period, Bogatyr belongs to medium maturing group, thus formation of spikes and ripeness begins one day later than the standard Vikont. As compared to the standard, the new variety is taller, with a firm and resilient stem and with high resistance to lodging. The variety has an advantage comparatively to the standard in terms of amount of kernels per spike, weight of kernels per spike, resistance to dwarf leaf rust and brown patch. It yields to the Vikont variety in productive tilling capacity and thousand grain weight.
