Summary. VNikitsky Botanical Gardens, founded in 1812, is an internationally renowned center for introduction and mobilization of plants, including decorative woody plants. In recent decades, a lot of attention is focused on the fundamental work on the introduction and bio-ecological study of new species and forms of decorative plants in Nikitsky Botanical Gardens. This enables on the basis of extensive empirical data to evaluate objectively the introduction possibilities of cultivated plants, improve the breeding system and develop recommendations for effective use of decorative plants in landscape gardening construction. To date, one of actual problems in analysis of the introduction results and the current state of the dendrologic collection of arboretum in Nikitsky Botanical Gardens is to carry out an inventory work with bioecological characteristic of state and growth conditions of woody plants, which serve as the main structural elements of landscape compositions. During the period from 1990 to 2014 it was lost 157 taxa in arboretum collection of NBG. The greatest reduction was registered in the amount of shrubs: 88 taxa, or 58.4% of the total number of plants lost. The number of trees decreased by 56 taxa, or 35.7%. Downsizing of dendrologic collections was due to the decline in the quality of its maintenance at the end of the twentieth century, as well as the actions of extreme weather conditions: severe dry period in the 1993-1994 and abnormally low temperatures in March 2006 and February 2012. Temperature regime in winter and spring is the most important climatic factor limiting the growth and development of introduced decorative plants in the parks of arboretum of Nikitsky Botanical Gardens.
