Summary. Nitrogen fertilizers play a leading role among all fertilizers used at rice cultivation. Unproductive losses of nitrogen during the growing season can reach 70% or more. The aim of the research was to study the effect of nitrification inhibitor ATG (4-amino – 1,2,4-triazol) on the content of nitrate and ammonium nitrogen in the soil, improvement of fertilizer efficiency and rice yields while maintaining soil fertility. Field experiments were carried out on rice meadow-chernozem soil in All-Russian Research Institute of Rice Breeding and EBE “Krasnoe”. The scheme of the first experiment was: P90K60–the background; background + N120 (before sowing rice); background + N60 (before rice sowing) + N60 (at the stage of 5-6 leaves); background + N120 + nitrification inhibitor ATG (before rice sowing). The scheme of the second experiment was: the control–N120P90K60; N120P90K60 + nitrification inhibitor ATG. The combined use of the nitrification inhibitor with nitrogen fertilizers allows reducing loss of nitrate nitrogen by 0.28-0.68 mg/100 g and increasing the amount of ammonia by1.31 and 0.06 mg/100 g compared to the main and separate applications, increases the utilization rate of nitrogen to 30.0%. Simultaneously, non-hydrolysable residue in the humus rises, which promotes the maintenance of rice soil fertility. Rice yield increased by 0.46 t/ha with using nitrification inhibitor ATG, which ensured the return of unit of introduced nitrogen fertilizer by production of the main harvest of 91.3 kg grain/kg N. Combined use of nitrification inhibitor together with nitrogen fertilizers helps maintaining higher levels of exchangeable ammonium in soils, as well as reducing the amount of nitrates.

Keywords: rice, nitrogen fertilizer, nitrification inhibitor, yield, fertility.
