USE OF SECONDARY RESOURCES OF POTATO PRODUCTS AS RAW MATERIAL FOR STARCH PRODUCTION AT SMALL-CAPACITY LINES

Summary. With current import of potato starch about 40,000 tons its production in Russia does not exceed 10,000 tons. At the same time the volume of potato food production in the Russian Federation increased from 106,000 tons in 2009 to 186,000 tons in 2013. This requires more than 1 m tons of tubers, and the fraction of waste products as nonstandard tubers, peelings, cuttings (secondary resources) is from 20 to 40%, which on the average is more than 300,000 tons annually. With increasing volumes of production of potato products the volumes of wastes grow proportionally, and the problems with their rational use emerged. The investigations, carried out in the All-Russian Research Institute of Starch Products, revealed the possibility of use of nonstandard potato and waste products as a source for additional raw material for starch. In particular, dry matter content in potato of small fraction of nonstandard potato reaches 19%, and starch content–14.5%. The output of starch from studied secondary raw material varied from 81 to 92% from its initial concentration. The processing technology at the lines with capacity of 10, 25 and 50 t/day, developed in the All-Russian Research Institute of Starch Products, enables to use such resource. With the use of such lines at reprocessors and sorting stations it is possible to additionally produce 30,000 tons of starch annually from 300,000 tons of nonstandard potato and secondary raw material. It can help to solve the problem of import substitution to a large degree.
