Summary. In 2013-2014 on the basis of OOO “Agricultural Company Hatas” the physiological and biochemical status and level of natural resistance of 10 calves of Kholmogory breed were studied in dynamics: from the first day of life to 10-day age. By the end of colostral stage some blood indices increased in calves. Among them are the content of total protein–by 9.1%, albumin–by 12.2%; urea–by 49.8%, the activity of alkaline phosphatase–by 9.24%, alanine aminotransferase–by 23.4%, aspartate aminotransferase–by 11.9%, lactic dehydrogenase–by 0.2%, creatine kinase–by 3.1% and gamma glutamyltransferase–by 45.7%, in comparison with data at one-day age. Neutrophil phagocytic rate during colostral period was above physiological standards on average by 9.5%. Other indicators of natural resistance at newborn calves reliably increased by the 10th day: phagocytic activity (PA)–by 5.37%; phagocytic index (PI)–by 1.98%. Indicators of PA and PI although do not exceed standard indices of natural resistance, but they also were rather high and corresponded to the upper limit of physiological standards for this species of animals. In full-age cows of Kholmogory breed similar indices of opsono-phagocytic reaction were in limits of physiological norms, but they were much lower: PA–by 30.3%, PI–by 43.8% and PN (phagocytic number)–by 9.3%, in comparison with that at newborn calves by the end of colostral period.

Keywords: cattle, Kholmogory breed, colostral period, phase of neonatality, metabolism, natural resistance, adaptation.
