Summary. The aim of the study was to improve soil protection technology at the cultivation of pea on erosion threatening slopes of 3.5-4.0 degrees. We studied the effects of moldboard tillage by mounted plough PN-5-35 at 20-22 cm, soil-protecting tillage by chisel plough PCh-2.5 at the same depth. We also evaluated the effect of different doses of fertilizers: natural fertility; moderate one – application of P70K90 for both tillage methods; and increased one – application of P90K120. Tillage methods had significant and multidirectional effect on pea productivity in 2003, 2005 and 2011 only. In 2003 the pea yield at chisel tillage was 1.22 t/ha and was significantly, by 0.12 t/ha, higher than at moldboard one; in 2005 and 2011 the productivity at moldboard treatment was 2.17 and 2.93 t/ha, respectively, which is by 0.47 and 0.14 t/ha higher than at chisel one. The major factor of improving soil fertility and pea yield on erosion threatening lands is the level of fertilizer application. It is noted the systematic and significant influence of this factor on pea productivity, with the exception of 2007 and 2008. The highest yield of pea using moderate and increased levels of fertilizers was obtained in 2011, and it was 3.02 and 3.20 t/ha, respectively. As a result of studies it was established the equivalence of moldboard and chisel tillage. The effective rate of fertilizer at pea cultivation in the Azov zone of Rostov region is P70K90.
