Summary. The investigations were carried out in 2013-2015 at the premises of I.G. Kalinenko All-Russian Research Institute of Grain Crops (Zernograd, Rostov region) according to the procedure of State Commission for variety testing of crops in order to enhance raw sources for processing food industry. The objects of the research were varieties of grain sorghum, listed in the State Register of Selection Achievements, samples of competitive test and collection nursery. Varieties Khazine 28, Zernogradskoe 53, Luchistoe, Orlovskoe, Zernogradskoe 88 and Velikan are characterized by high content of starch in kernels (on average 74.1-76.1% over three years). The content of crude protein less than 12.5% was registered for varieties Orlovskoe (11.4%), Velikan (12.0%), Khazine 28 (12.2%), Zernogradskoe 88 (12.2%) and Zernogradskoe 53 (12.2%). There is a negative correlation among these traits (r is from -0.45 to -0.69). The identified regularity allows doing an important breeding work to develop grain sorghum varieties with a high content of starch and a low content of protein. Kernels of grain sorghum have lower content of oil, compared with maize. Among the varieties, bred at I.G. Kalinenko All-Russian Research Institute of Grain Crops and admitted for usage in the Russian Federation, the lowest content of raw oil was registered in the varieties Luchistoe (3.45%), Orlovskoe (3.69%), Zernogradskoe 88 (3.76%) and Velikan (3.87%). The correlation between the content of starch and raw oil in kernels varied from the middle positive (r = 0.36 ± 0.05) to the weak negative (r = -0.29 ± 0.05).

Keywords: sorghum, kernels, breeding, starch, protein, oil, variety, correlation.
