Summary. In order to study the quality of rice grain from the different parts of a panicle, we tested 10 varieties originated in All-Russian Research Institute of Rice breeding harvested in 2014 and 2015 from the demonstration field of this institute in p. Belozerny of Krasnodar Krai. In the research, we studied the following quality characteristics of grain from different panicle parts: weight of 1000 absolutely dry (a.d.) grains, caryopsis size, husk content, grain vitreousness. The different technological quality of rice grains is due to their location in the panicle. The thousand grain weight from the upper parts was higher by 0.4-2.5 g than from the lower ones, the ratio of grain length to breadth was higher by 0.1-0.2 (except for the Olimp variety, its values were almost equal). Significantly high differences in grain fracturing were found in the Atlant variety (31%), in other varieties they did not exceed 2-6%. Varieties Khazar, Sonata, Diamant and Olimp were classified as varieties with low fracturing and vertical panicle. Caryopses varied in their shape depending on their location in the panicle: in the upper part they were more prolonged, in the lower part – thicker. Varieties Olimp, Sonata, Favorit, Krepysh, Kurazh, Diamant had less expressed difference in the quality of grain. The Khazar variety was subsumed under the group with average variation due to caryopses location on the panicle by all technological traits. Sonet, Anait and Atlant are varieties with high variability of technological traits in the panicle. Due to the positive influence of grain homogeneity by quality in batches delivered for processing on the final product (groats), it is recommended to carry out rice breeding on lowering the difference of quality of grain in the panicle. The varieties Olimp and Kurazh with insignificant changes of technological characteristics of quality depending on the grain location in the panicle are recommended to use in breeding programs as sources of valuable trait.
