ESTIMATION OF COMBINING ABILITY OF INBRED LINES OF WINTER RYE IN TOPCROSSES

Summary. Winter rye is a promising culture in the way of heterosis breeding. The important stage in its realization is the examination of homozygous inbred lines on combining ability. The purpose of our research is to estimate the general and specific combining ability of inbred lines of winter rye on the basis of test crossings according to the topcross scheme and to reveal the best parental forms for usage in heterosis breeding. According to the topcross scheme, we crossed ten homozygous inbred lines of rye with two line-testers: Н-842 and Н-1172. We obtained 20 interline hybrids F1, which were studied in 2015 in a field experiment on plots with the area of 15 м2 in three replications with seeding rate 500 grains per 1 м2. The yielding ability of hybrids F1 varied from 7.12 to 8.38 t/ha (tester Н-842) and from 8.11 to 9.71 t/ha (tester Н-1172). We analyzed the genotypic variance of yield on three components (GCA of lines, GCA of testers, SCA of separate combinations) with the subsequent calculation of effects of the general and specific combining ability. Maternal lines Н-649 and Н-577, as well as paternal line-tester Н-1172, had essentially high estimations of GCA. The lines Н-649, Н-663, and Н-1078 showed reliably high effects of SCA. The fraction of yield variance caused by the effects of GCA was 2 times less (31.8%) than the fraction of variance caused by the effects of SCA (66.8%). The inference is made, that in the investigated hybrids the prevailing part of yield variance is determined by effects of nonadditive genetic variability.
