Summary. We studied the influence of fed microadditives of sodium selenite and potassium iodide on the rumen content of young cattle. The study was carried out in ZAO “Beregovoi” in Kemerovo region at fattening steers of Black-and-White breed. It was formed 4 groups of steers at the age of 6 months (one control group and 3 experimental groups) in 12 head. Selenium and iodine in the form of sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) and potassium iodide (KI) were fed once a day at the age from 6 to 12 months. Every dose of drugs pre-dissolved in water was given together with concentrates. The content of rumen was sampled from the experimental animals at the age of 12 months with the naso-esophageal probe and Kamovsky’s pump one hour before feeding. In the samples we determined the medium reaction by pH-meter, total amount of volatile fatty acids (VFA) by the method of steam distillation in the Markham’s apparatus, the total number of ciliates in the Goryaev’s counting chamber. Feeding of selenium and iodine did not lead to the increase in pH, it was in the range of 7.07-7.15. There was an insignificant increase (P is less 0.95) in the total number of ciliates in rumen content in animals from the experimental groups (283,280-311,300 pcs/ml) compared to the control (268,520 ± 12,360 pcs/ml). The level of volatile fatty acids in the rumen content from animals, fed with selenium and iodine, was in the range of 8.46-8.83 mmol/100 ml, which was higher (P is less 0.95) than in the control (8.33 ± 0.83 mmol/100 ml). The increase in the number of ciliates in rumen content contributed to more efficient digestion of feed, and the increase in the concentration of volatile fatty acids in the rumen testified that the animals from the experimental groups were better supplied with energy. Joint feeding of selenium and iodine had a greater stimulating effect on digestion in the rumen than the feeding of each of these micronutrients separately.

Keywords: selenium, iodine, cattle, young animals, contents of rumen, ciliates, volatile fatty acids.
