Summary. An experience in restoration of the functionality of diesel engines of KamAZ and YaMZ series, corresponding to the requirements of the standards Euro 2 and Euro 3, revealed a high failure density of the details of the cylinder-piston section. This paper provides an overview of theoretical and experimental investigations carried out in order to reveal the causes of the reduction of operation reliability of diesel engines with an intermediate cooling system. An intensive use of diesel engines of vehicles in the Sakha (Yakutia) Republic during the winter period, when ambient temperatures are from minus 45 to minus 65 degrees is mainly carried out continuously for 50-60 days. In this case, the engine can operate in the idle mode for about 12 hours. The operation of the engine with the cooling in the idle mode and with low loads negatively affects the conditions of the operation process. The delay period of the ignition of the fuel is a key parameter that characterizes the operation of diesel engines equipped with a turbocharger. Therefore, the improving of the reliability of diesel engines operating in different climatic conditions requires the study of physical and chemical processes of the fuel ignition delay. Today, there is no a common opinion on this problem. The increase in the operational reliability of diesel engines with the blowing air cooling, working under conditions of the Extreme North and the Arctic zone of the country, requires the accelerating complex of experimental researches taking into account all significant factors influencing the delay period of the ignition of the fuel. There is a need in using of existing research methods, as well as the creation of new methods. The study of the different phases of fuel ignition depending on the temperature of boost air may contribute to the development of new principles of design of heat exchanging systems, regulating the degree of cooling of boost air, which increase the operational reliability of the engine.
Keywords: diesel internal-combustion engines, delay of fuel ignition, low temperatures, reliability.
