Abstract. The paper presents the analysis of the dynamics of the main indicators of soil fertility in Ulyanovsk region for 1965-2015 (the contents of humus, mobile phosphorus and potassium, trace elements, heavy metals, soil acidity), the balance of main mineral nutrients and yield of crops. The soils of the region, presented mainly by chernozems and gray forest soils, are quite provided with available phosphorus and potassium, copper, manganese and sulfur on 01/01/2016; the weighted average content of them is 125.1, 136.6, 3.2, 15.3 and 4.7 mg/kg, respectively. At the same time, they are severely deficient in mobile compounds of zinc; 98 % of arable land is provided with zinc at a low level that expects the application of zinc fertilizers. The acid regime of soils is of special concern. The reaction of the soil solution on the average is quite satisfactory, and pH(KCl) is 5.6. The area of acid soils on 01/01/2016 was 676,600 hectares (49 % of the area surveyed), including 1,100 ha of very strongly acidic, 14,600 ha of strongly acidic, 207,300 ha of medium acid and 453,600 ha of slightly acid soils. The share of acid soils in several areas is from 50 to 95 % of the surveyed arable land. The latter stipulates for their immediate liming, almost completely stopped in the 1990s.
