Abstract. The experimental research was carried out in the laboratory of winter exploitation of FGBOU VO Novosibirsk State Agrarian University in 2014-2015. The purpose of the experiment was to study the regularities of wear of details of the cylinder-piston group (CPG) of D-240 engines at low ambient temperature. The design if the experiment included comparative analysis of abrasion of sleeves and piston rings in engines with three methods of start preparation: the maintenance of the engine thermal conditions by means of the external power source and then the warm start; pre-start warming-up of cold engine by means of autonomous preheater and further start; automatic self-heating of engine in parking period between shifts (AWE). Abrasion of CPG details was determined by the method of artificial bases by UPOI-6 device. The smallest wear of the parts of the CPG was observed while maintaining the thermal regime of the engine from an external source of heat during the storage between shifts. However, this method requires significant material costs, and often it is unacceptable due to lack of external power sources (such as timber cutting, gas- and oil-field, etc.). Applying of the other two methods depends on the specific operating conditions. In the variant with the preheater, the average diametric wear of sleeves per one “start-up–warm-up” is in the range of 0.059–0.087 micrometers. Therefore, for a short inter-shift interval and high engine mass, it is advisable to use the AWE mode, which allows to reduce the wear of the main parts of the CPG. For long parking, especially for small-sized engines, the use of pre-starting heaters are more preferable, since in AWE mode the total wear of parts and fuel consumption increase. Warm engine start accompanies with the significant reduction of abrasion in comparison with cold start; for example, in AWE mode the abrasion decreases 4.2 times for sleeves and about 4 times for piston rings, and at preheater usage the abrasion decreases 6 times for sleeves and rings.
