Abstract. The article presents the data on germination and germination energy of seeds of wild species of the grass family, widespread in the plant cover of steppe cenosis of Stavropol Territory: Dactylis glomerata, Koeleria cristata, Bromopsis inermis, Festuca valesiaca, Festuca regeliana, Phleum phleoides. Seeds were collected in 2013 at the time of their maturation (at the stage from wax to full ripeness at the humidity of 13–25 %) on virgin land in a zone of unstable humidification (the annual sum of rainfall is 450–650 mm). The ability and energy of germination were determined in 2013–2016. Seeds were couched under laboratory conditions at the temperature of 18–20 Celsius degrees. Seeds of Dactylis glomerata and Festuca regeliana kept high viability (84–94 %) within 32 months. Fresh-gathered seeds of Bromopsis inermis immediately after collecting did not have high viability (32 %); and fresh-gathered seeds of Dactylis glomerata, Bromopsis inermis, Festuca regeliana had a weak energy of germination (1-6 %). Seeds of Dactylis glomerata (91 %), Bromopsis inermis (99 %) and Festuca regeliana (100 %) reached the highest viability for the third year of storage. Such species as Koeleria cristata, Festuca valesiaca, Phleum phleoides virtually did not germinate in a fresh condition (0–1 %), however during the storage their germination ability (9–38 %) and energy of germination (15–37 %) increased. The greatest viability of seeds of Koeleria cristata (25–27 %), Festuca valesiaca (37–38 %), Phleum phleoides (9–22 %) was noted in the second and the third years of storage. Thus, seeds of the studied species of plants of grass family had the different percent of viability and energy of germination during three years, but they kept the viability and sowing qualities. On the basis of the obtained data the structure of the sowing grass mixture including the studied cereals-dominants can be formed.
