Abstract. We studied growth indicators of young animals taking into account the assessment of diet balance in Chelyabinsk region in 2010–2016. There were three groups of animals: I – purebred Hereford bull-calves and heifers; II – hybrid animals (1/2 blood of Black-and-White breed x 1/2 blood of Hereford breed); III – hybrid animals (1/4 blood of Black-and-White breed x 3/4 blood of Hereford breed). Each group included 10 bull-calves and 10 heifers. All animals up to six months of age were raised under cows-breadwinners. The level of feeding of bull-calves and heifers corresponded to the recommended standards and amounted to 3.47 energy feed units (EFU) for bull-calves in the period of 6–12 months, 2.69 EFU in the period of 12–15 months; for heifers, these values were 2.85 and 3.38 EFU, respectively. Significantly higher growth during the entire period of fattening (6–15 months) was registered in bull-calves and heifers of II group: 1006.89 and 824.52 g/day, respectively, which is by 15.65 and 3.33%; 1.85 and 2.33% more, in comparison with animals of I and III groups, respectively. Bulls from II group spent 10.11 EFU, 101.19MJ of exchange energy and 891.94 g of digestible protein per 1 kg of growth, which was less by 3.16, 3.13, 3.13% than peers from I group. The nutritional intake of feed for 1 kg of growth in calves from II group was 8.02 EFU, 80.09 MJ of exchange energy and 694.71 g of digestible protein, which is lower than in group I by 17.99, 18.04, 18.04% respectively. Thus, the young animals from II group had the greatest ability to convert nutrients from feed into products.
