Abstract. The aim of the research was to determine the optimal background of mineral nutrition and planting density for potato ‘Kurazh’ of the middle-early maturity group under conditions of the Middle Volga region. The research was carried out on gray forest soil of the medium loamy granulometric composition. The humus content in the arable layer (according to I.V. Tyurin) was 3.38–3.46%, the content of hydrolyzable nitrogen (by A.H. Cornfield) was 141–155 mg/kg of soil, of mobile phosphorus and exchange potassium (by A.T. Kirsanov) – 118–152 and 156-166 mg/kg of soil. The experiments were conducted against two backgrounds of mineral nutrition calculated for obtaining the planned yields of tubers of 30 t/ha (manure 20 t/ha + N(47–73)P(30–80)К(102–104)) and 40 t/ha (manure 40 t/ha + N(112–133)Р(105–135)К(164–208)) in comparison with a variant without fertilizers. Against the background of natural fertility, at the flowering stage depending on the planting density potato plants formed leaves area of 25,780–30,430 m2/ha, against the application of 20 t/ha manure + N(47–73)P(30–80)К(102–104) – 39,600–44,540 m2/ha. The largest leaves area (46,070–53,540 m2/ha) were formed against the fertilizer background, calculated for the yield of 40 t/ha. Tubers grown against the background, calculated for the yield of 30 t/ha of tubers, had the best biochemical indicators. Depending on the planting density the content of dry matter in tubers against this background varied from 22.42 to 22.79%, of starch – from 13.50 to 13.86%, of vitamin C – from 22.61 to 23.35 mg%. On the basis of the obtained data, we can conclude that in order to improve quality indicators of tubers the level of the planned yield should be 30 t/ha.
