Abstract. The investigations were carried out in Stavropol Research Agricultural Institute in 2002–2016. The aim of the study was to select an initial material for the development of a new variety, adapted to cultivation in the south of Russia. The soil of an experimental plot was an ordinary chernozem, medium thick, medium loamy, low humic. The climate of the zone is moderately continental; summers are hot and dry. More than 300 collection and selection variety samples of Melissa officinalis were used as a material for the research. A new variety of Melissa officinalis ‘Lambada’ was developed by the method of polycrossing of collection samples with a subsequent selection of a biotype and strengthening of the specified features and properties in subsequent generations. The variety was included in the State register of selection achievements of the Russian Federation in 2016 with the admission for the cultivation in all regions of the country. The variety is characterized by a powerful development of herbage; it belongs to the group of medium-late varieties. The vegetation period from the beginning of spring regrowth to the first cut for the green is 42–45 days, until the full flowering – 85–90 days, to full ripeness of seeds – 160–180 days. The variety is resistant to drought, frost, lodging, diseases and pests. The average yield over 3–4 years of use of herbage is 40.0–45.0 t/ha of green mass, 9.0–10.5 t/ha – of dry mass and 0.4–0.5 t/ha of conditioned seeds. The vegetable raw material has a strong aroma. The content of essential oil in the crude mass is 0.50–0.60%; the main component is citral (55%). The technology of variety cultivation for plant material and seeds is common for Melissa officinalis.
