EFFICIENCY OF ASH AND SLAG MATERIALS IN CUCUMBER GROWING ON MEADOW-CHERNOZEMIC SOIL

Abstract. The purpose of the study was to assess characteristics of meadow-chernozemic soil, cucumber yield and product quality when ash and slag materials of a thermoelectric power station were used as fertilizer. The studies were carried out in the southern subzone of the forest-steppe zone of Omsk region on meadow-chernozemic low-thick low-humic heavy-loamy soil with the thickness of humus layer of 37 cm in 2012–2016. Soil density in the layer of 0–30 cm was 1.20 g/cm3; the medium reaction of aqueous extract was 6.9–7.3; the content of humus in the arable horizon was 4.5–5.0%; the content of nitrate nitrogen was 17.9–20.0 mg/kg, of mobile phosphorus – 70.5–78.5 mg/kg, of exchange potassium – 208–217 mg/kg. The design of the experiment included the following variants: a control (meadow-chernozemic soil); manure, 5 t/ha; powdered ash, 5 t/ha; granulated ash (Granzol), 5 t/ha; powdered ash, 10 t/ha + manure, 10 t/ha; granulated ash, 10 t/ha + manure (Granzol-P), 10 t/ha. Fertilizers and ameliorants were applied at a depth of 0–20 cm once in 2012 before sowing. The area of experimental plots was 5 m2; the replication was three-fold; the forecrop was potato. Experiments were carried out on cucumber ‘Izyashchny’ (“Elegant”). The content of heavy metals in ash and slag materials and cucumbers, grown with the use of them, did not exceed the maximum permissible concentrations. The use of Granzol-P allowed improving the structural condition of the soil: the content of agronomically valuable aggregates (0.25–10.00 mm) increased by 20%, compared with the control, the quantity of water-resistant aggregates reached 90%. With the use of Granzol-P the content of nitrate nitrogen was 25.4 mg/kg, of mobile phosphorus – 130.1mg/kg, of exchange potassium – 190.2 mg/kg. In this variant the yield increase was maximal and amounted of 27.4 t/ha with a content of dry matter of 4.97% and of ascorbic acid of 12.81 mg/%. The use of Granzol-P ameliorant, compared with the variant with manure, led to an increase in net income 2.8 times and a decrease in cost 1.2 times.
