Abstract. The purpose of the study was to develop a new, highly productive variety with high adaptive properties and good grain quality. The work was carried out in 2005–2017. In 2005, line 2922/04 was crossed with Tribune variety, combination No 96. The individual selection was performed twice: in F2 and F4. In 2010, the most promising 6 families were identified out of 43 families, one of which became the ancestor of new variety ‘Ataman Platov’. In its pedigree, there were varieties of AD 206, Zenit of Odessa (“Zenit Odessky”) (Ukraine), PRAG 46/2-46/3 (DOS VIR, Dagestan), Lasko (Poland), TSW 2507 (Germany), Tribune. The variety is medium tall, the height of the straw is 70–95 cm, the resistance to lodging is high. The productivity potential is more than 10 t/ha. The variety is characterized by an average protein content in grain (13.4–14.6%), high starch content (63.8–68.3%). Volumetric bread output ranges from 680 to 800 cm3. The average grain yield after bare fallow in the competitive variety test was 8.91 t/ha, after leguminous plants, it was 5.72 t/ha. The maximum grain harvest in the test was observed in 2016 – 11.53 t/ha. The variety was the leader in terms of the yield in the environmental test in the Kursk Research Institute of Agroindustrial Production during 2014–2017. Ataman Platov successfully passed the State variety test; the largest harvest gain was obtained at test plots in the Vladimir, Tula, and Orel regions. It is admitted for the use in production since 2018 in four regions: Central, Central Black Soil, North Caucasus and Middle Volga. The variety produced the highest yield when it is sown in early and optimal dates for the zone (from August 25 to September 15), it responded well to the application of early-spring dressings with nitrogen.
