Abstract. In 2016–2017 under conditions of the Smolensk region 41 samples of fibre flax from the collection of the All-Russian Institute of Flax Breeding were examined to identify promising genotypes for inclusion in the breeding process. The unfavourable conditions in 2017 at a critical period of plant growth (seedlings – budding), caused by soil overwetting, allowed the assessment of samples for resistance to this stress factor. The stability of collection samples was determined by Zhivotkov’s method on the basis of a comparative assessment of the yield of flax fibre and the average value of standards. Valuable forms were selected according to the main economic characteristics: early ripeness, height, the yield of straw and the content of fibre, seed yield. Early maturing forms ripened 6 days earlier than Lider standard: L. 323-02, K-470, K-753, K-375, K-230, K-737. The tall-growing forms were China 1, L. 92199-6-5. According to the straw yield and fibre content, Andrea variety was the best (7.13 t/ha and 29.6%, respectively), whereas L. Kristal x Istra and Kastychaj stood out by seed productivity (1.01 t/ha). The highest fiber content (over 30 %) was in samples Cesar, Nadezhda, L. 323-02, L. 319-02, Yarok, Altea, which surpassed standard Smolich 5.6–12.3%. Cesar, Sinel’, Dobrynya and Hermes were resistant to overwetting. The biological yield of flax fibre in these varieties varied from 1.42 to 2.66 t/ha, while among other varieties of flax, included in the State Register of the Russian Federation, the value of this parameter was 0.60–0.85 t/ha with the exception of Tost 3 and Universal varieties, the yield of which was 1.21 t/ha).
