Abstract. The efficiency of cultivation of legume-grass herbages with Galega orientalis for green mass on sod-podzolic soil of the Kostroma region was determined. Field studies were carried out in 2004–2006 in the Kostroma Research Institute of Agriculture. The objects of the research were single-crop and mixed sowings of Galega orientalis with Phalaris arundinacea, Festuca arundinacea, Bromus inermis, Phleum pratense. The seeding rates of Galega orientalis were 4 and 2.8 mln germinating seeds per hectare for single-crop and mixed sowings, respectively. The seeding rate for Phalaris arundinacea was 11 mln seeds/ha, for Festuca arundinacea it was 2.6 mln seeds/ha, for Bromus inermis it was 2.0 mln seeds/ha, for Phleum pretense the seeding rate was 6.4 mln/ha. Weather conditions in 2004–2006 were favourable for the growth and development of the studied herbs. Humidification in 2004 was excessive (HTC was 2.1), in 2005 the first half of the growing season was characterized by increased rainfall (HTC was 1.54), the second half was arid (HTC was 0.66); in 2006 the vegetation was moderately dry (HTC was 0.99 before the first hay-harvest and 0.87 before the after-grass). For the yield of dry mass (9.31 t/ha) and the yield of crude protein (1.42 t/ha) the single-crop sowing of Galega orientalis stood out. Among cereal components to create grass mixtures with Galega orientalis, Bromus inermis, Festuca arundinacea, Phleum pratense are the most preferable, as they provided the obtaining of 7.92–8.93 t/ha of dry weight, 0.98–1.32 t/ha of crude protein and 76.1–91.8 GJ/ha of exchangeable energy. The competitiveness of Galega orientalis in relation to Gramineae grasses increased with increasing age of the grass mixture. Its share in mixed herbage was 54.4–97.9% and had a decisive influence on the content of crude protein in the yield, which reached 17.3% in the mixtures with Bromus inermis and 18.7% in the mixtures with Phleum pratense versus 18.5% in the green mass of Galega orientalis.
