Abstract. The article presents the results of breeding work in Agricultural Scientific Center “Donskoy” over 2001–2017, as a result of which new productive rice varieties ‘Virasan’ and ‘Piruet’, well adapted to the climate and soil of the south of the Rostov region, were developed and handed over for the State Variety Testing. The early ripening rice ‘Virasan’ was developed from the hybridization of early ripening variety ‘Virazh’ and average ripening, vigorously growing variety ‘Kuban 3’. The vegetation period of the variety is 110 days. The plants are of low height (76 cm) with compact erected 14 cm tall panicles. In each panicle there are on average 112 kernels 7.5 mm long and 4.0 mm wide. The weight of 1000 kernels is 31.4 g. In the competitive testing, the average productivity of ‘Virasan’ during 3 years was 6.66 t/ha, which was higher by 0.50 t/ha than that of the standard variety ‘Kontakt’. The mid-season variety ‘Piruet’ was developed from the crossing of hybrids ‘S101-A-51’x ‘Boyarin’ and ‘S101-Lac’ x ‘Virage’. With the help of marker breeding, it was possible to obtain forms having three blast resistant genes Pi-1, Pi-2, Pi-33 in the homozygous state. The vegetation period from sowing to maturation is 124 days for ‘Piruet’. The variety is of medium height (88 cm). A panicle is 17.5 cm in length, forms on average 162 oval kernels 8.9 mm long and 3.7 mm wide. The weight of 1000 kernels is 31.6 g. The productivity of ‘Piruet’ was 9.57 t/ha in the competitive variety testing, which exceeded the productivity of the standard variety ‘Yuzhanin’ on 1.13 t/ha.
