Abstract. he purpose of the study was to assess the information capability of the spectral characteristics of the reflectivity of leaves of common spring wheat seedlings under the action of the causative agent of ordinary root rot of cereals (Bipolaris sorokiniana Shoem.) for early diagnosis of pathogen resistance. The work was conducted in 2018–2019 in the Novosibirsk region. Material for the study was the medium susceptible to the disease varieties of common spring wheat ‘Novosibirskaya 44’ and ‘Novosibirskaya 18’. The seeds were artificially infected with B. sorokiniana. The control seeds were not infected. We defined the spectral characteristics of the 12-day-old seedling leaves, including reflection spectra and vegetative indices, the length and dry biomass of the seedlings and roots, disease development index, and specific electrical conductivity (SEC) of the water extracts of the leaves. We used 7 different indices: normalized differential vegetation index (NDVI), including in the extreme red spectrum (RNDVI) and modified normalized differential vegetation index (mNDVI), Vogelman indices 1, 2 and 3 (VOG1, VOG2, VOG3) for the near-infrared slope, and water index (WI). Response to stress was evaluated by the relative change in the measured parameters. The spectral regions of 550–680 nm and 730–900 nm were the most informative with a maximum difference in the region of 680 nm. Novosibirskaya 18 variety was characterized by a decrease in 5 out of 7 vegetation indices by 46.7–62.6%, compared with the control. Only 3 indices of Novosibirskaya 44 variety changed by 19.2–50.0%. These differences were comparable with the results of evaluating the reaction of varieties by SEC of seedling leave water extracts. Novosibirskaya 18 showed an increase of 57.9%, compared to the control; Novosibirskaya 44 showed an increase of 28.0%. The maximum intervarietal differences were established by NDVI and SEP of seedling leave extracts. The use of NDVI, RNDVI, mNDVI, VOG2, and VOG3 can be recommended for early diagnosis of resistance of the varieties to the causative agent of cereal ordinary root rot – Bipolaris sorokiniana Shoem.
