Abstract. The work was carried out in the Republic of Tatarstan over the 2005–2018 period. The aim was to develop a competitive pea variety for consumption as dry split pea with an improved attracting capability and resistance to pod shatter. The source material was created by hybridization of two parental forms with tendril-type leaves followed by the individual selection of plants. The donor of reduced formation of lignin in pea shells, which determines pod-shattering resistance, was the parental component MC-1D (k-8853, VIR). KT-6238 sample, which served as a maternal form, was isolated from a complex hybrid population with the participation of Legenda (Poland), Pershotsvit (Ukraine), Merkato (Netherlands) and Batyr (Russia) varieties. When selecting plants, the number of productive nodes with a pair of well-seeded pods on three nodes was used as a marker. The reconstruction of the reproductive zone during the selection process was aimed at increasing the seed-forming ability of plants. Under the conditions of insufficient moisture supply, samples with lightweight seeds with a low mass of 1000 seeds at a level of 165–210 g were competitive. Among them, KT-6477 sample under the name of Fregat was forwarded to the state test. As a result of the redistribution of productivity elements on the plant, the seed-forming ability of the new variety, determined by the proportion of seed formation from ovules and depending on the conditions of the year, reached 76.9–87.8%. The microplastic coefficient, which reflects the proportion of the mass of pea shells in the total mass of seed-bearing pods, decreased to 7.6–12.6%. For a standard cultivating variety, the values of these indicators were 53.0–58.2 and 14.8–18.0%, respectively. Under the conditions of moisture supply deficiency, Fregat forms a yield increase of up to 0.54 t/ha and combines resistance to pod shattering with that to lodging. Fregat has been approved for cultivation in the Middle Volga region.

Keywords: field pea (Pisum sativum L.); variety; reduced lignin formation; pod shatter resistance; seed productivity; microplastic coefficient.
