Abstract. The purpose of the study was to identify collection samples of Medicago varia and Medicago sativa that are promising for breeding under conditions of the Middle Urals. The seeds were sown in the summer of 2015; the records were kept in 2017–2019. The study material was 21alfalfa varieties of various ecological and geographical origins; the standard was Sarga variety. Sowing method was wide row coverless with the rate of 9 million pcs/ha. The yield of green mass of the studied genotypes varied within 2.5–20.8 kg/10 m2. The best values of this indicator were noted for varieties Viktoria, Daria, and Izumrud – 20.1 kg/10 m2, 20.8 kg/10 m2, and 19.4 kg/10 m2, respectively. The collection of dry matter on average over three years was 0.51–4.49 kg/10 m2. Daria and Izumrud varieties exceeded the standard in terms of this indicator by 18% and 14%, respectively. On average, over the years of the study, leafiness at the first hay cutting was 43–56%; the highest indicator (51–56%) was registered for samples Viktoria, Daria, Alfa, and Sarga. In the fifth year of life (2019), the highest value of this indicator (60–65%) was observed in Sarga, Viktoria, Guzel, and Daria varieties. For four years (2016–2019), the average seed yield of the Russian varieties was 26.6–116.9 g/10 m2; the average seed yield of foreign varieties was 16.7–47.9 g/10 m2. In terms of this indicator, Sarga standard (68.9 g/10 m2) was significantly exceeded by Viktoria (by 70%) and Uralochka (by 18%) varieties.
