Abstract. The purpose of the studies was to assess the cultural and biochemical properties and primary efficacy of 20 strains of Sinorhizobium fredii (Scholla, Elkan, 1984) bred in the All-Russian Research Institute of Soybean Breeding to select the most valuable of them. The work was performed in 2017–2019 in the Amur region. On a mineral-plant medium, 16 strains of rhizobia showed abundant growth of a pure culture stroke; 4 strains showed rapid growth of the bacterial mass. Its colour varied from white (4 strains) and whitish (8 strains) to colourless (8 strains). By consistency, the S. fredii strains were divided into 3 groups – paste-like (9 strains), watery (9), and jelly-like (2). All strains, except for BD-32 and 062, showed a growth of a pure culture stroke on meat-peptone agar. Strains BB-49, BB-90, SB-39, TB-376, TB-490, TB-498, and 062 were characterized by high catalase activity; strains SB-38, SB-43, TB-372, TB-361, TB-488, and ZB-79 were characterized by medium or moderate catalase activity; strains BD-32, BB-87, TB-492, TB-524, TB-563, and OB-47 were catalase-inactive. During the years of the study, all strains influenced the growth of the aboveground part and roots of soybean Khabarovskaya 4 in the fruit formation phase. The weight of the aboveground part of bacterized plants increased, in comparison with the control, 2.1–3.8 times; the weight of roots increased 0.3–2.7 times. The greatest increase in the values of these indicators (3.0–3.8 times and 0.8–2.7 times, respectively) was noted when using strains SB-39, SB-43, TB-372, TB-488, TB-490, TB-563, and 062. Strains SB-39 and TB-498 caused an increase in nodulation, in comparison with the control, by 73–78%; BB-90, SB-43, TB-461, and 062 increased the mass of nodules more than 2 times. The use of strains BB-90, SB-38, SB-43, TB-376, TB-431, TB-488, 062, and ZB-79 provided an increase in the weight of one nodule, in comparison with the control, on average by 25–62%.
