Abstract. The study aimed to generalize and analyse the most relevant (not older than 10 years) data on the content and distribution of sulphur, manganese, cobalt, zinc, and boron in soils and plants, their physiological role, and sources. The information was selected using keywords from authoritative international (Scopus, Web of Science) and Russian (the core of RSCI) scientific citation bases. Trace elements enter the environment mainly from soil-forming rocks. The international average content (clarke) of sulphur in soils is 0.085%; manganese – 488–1000 mg/kg; zinc – 50–90 mg/kg; cobalt – 8.0–11.3 mg/kg; boron – 10–42 mg/kg. Chemical substances introduced as a result of economic activity are concentrated mainly in the humus-accumulative soil horizon at non-hazardous concentrations. To date, the issues of the content of mobile forms of microelements available for plants in Russian soils are considered only by region. Data on their content, generalized and accumulated by the Russian agrochemical service, is not yet widely applied in practice for optimizing plant nutrition and replenishing the lack of microelements in agrocenoses. At the same time, the share of arable soils with a low content of mobile sulphur (less than 2 mg/kg) in Russia as a whole is more than 90%; the share of arable soils with a low content of mobile cobalt (less than 0.15 mg/kg) exceeds 60%. The lack of trace elements in soils leads to an increase in the mineral inferiority of crop products. At the same time, a critically low level of sulphur in plant tissues of cereals is considered to be less than 0.12%; for manganese and zinc in the leaves of cereals this indicator is less than 10 mg/kg and 15 mg/kg; for boron in grain it is less than 1.0 mg/kg.

Keywords: trace elements; sulphur; manganese; zinc; cobalt; boron; soil; plants.
