Abstract. The purpose of the study was to substantiate methods for creating promising breeding material and breeding new lines adapted to the soil and climatic conditions of the Don River region. The work was performed in 2018–2020. The meteorological conditions due to droughts were unfavourable for the cultivation of spring durum wheat. HTC for the growing season in 2018 amounted to 1.03; in 2019, it amounted to 1.08; in 2020, it amounted to 0.78. However, in periods critical for ear formation, it was very low (0.00–0.44). This had a negative impact on grain yield. The source material was created in 2008–2013. In 2018–2020 we studied seven lines of spring durum wheat – Leuk 4783/15; Leuk 4125/17; Gord. 4193/17; Gord. 4804/18; Gord. 4806/18; Gord. 4807/18; Gord. 4888/18. Donskaya Elegia variety served as the standard. The average yield of the variety patterns for 2018–2020 varied from 1.90 t/ha to 2.02 t/ha and on average over three years amounted to 1.96 t/ha. It was the lowest in 2019 (1.44 –1.72 t/ha) and the highest in 2018 and 2020 (2.03–2.26 t/ha). Among the lines under study, we distinguished Gord. 4193/17 and Gord. 4804/18, which in terms of yield exceeded the standard by 0.29–0.33 t/ha. Gord. 4193/17 line differed from the rest of the studied varieties by early maturity (it ripened 2 days earlier than the standard) and high productive tilling capacity (1.5); it was hardly affected by powdery mildew (1%). Gord. 4804/18 line was characterized by well-filled grain (grain unit was 785 g/L) and high gluten content (37.3%); vitreousness was 98%. These lines will be sown in 2021 in a breeding nursery to transfer them to the State Variety Testing.
