Abstract. Bacterial disease blackleg is caused by a complex of bacteria of Pectobacterium, Dickeya genera. The symptoms of this disease are classic blackleg, aerial form of a blackleg, soft tuber rot and lenticel rot. The sources of infection for the first field generation of seed potato of higher grade seeds can be rain- and wind dispersed aerosols from neighboring infected potato crops or waste dumps; contaminated machinery; soil and ground water; crop and weed rhizospheres; insects and nematodes. Contaminated seed tubers are important sources of inoculum in later field generations. The disease is caused by a complex of phytopathogenic pectolytic bacteria from Pectobacterium and Dickeya genera. The main causes of the disease on potatoes are D. dianthicola, D. solani and P. atrosepticum, P. carotovorum, P. brasiliense, P. parmentieri. In the UK, online databases on potato varieties and on monitoring the statutory certification of seed and ware potatoes have been developed as a part of the support programme of breeding, seed and commercial potato production. As part of the implementation of the large-scale project ‘Improved seed management to minimise losses due to Pectobacterium, Dickeya species’, a system for protecting seed potatoes from these bacteria was developed, and a detailed programme was presented to reduce losses from the plant pathogens mentioned above. This programme includes sustainable seed production, application of agricultural cultivation practices, reduction of tuber damage, disinfection of storage facilities and equipment, as well as voluntary plant management. The use of such foreign experience in the Russian context will strengthen the competitiveness of potato producers and will contribute the sustainable development of the industry.
