Abstract. Amur silvergrass (Miscanthus sacchariflorus) is a new for Russia industrial crop, that is in demand in the chemical, paper-pulp and construction industries for the production of bioethanol, disposable tableware, cardboard, building blocks, etc. One of the main problems related to its cultivation is the lack of a well-developed technology for mass rapid vegetative propagation of the crop and the impossibility of generative propagation in the temperate climate zone. The only way out of this situation is to develop fast and cost-effective systems of vegetative propagation of miscanthus. The review aimed to evaluate and select miscanthus breeding methods suitable for creating industrial technical plantations in the temperate climate zone. The main methods of miscanthus vegetative propagation are: Rhizome production systems (RD) – a system for the production of planting material based on the division of rhizomes; Rhizome-derived plants (RP) – a seedling method involving the germination of rhizomes in cups; Stem cutting production systems (RS) – green plant cuttings based on the ability of miscanthus to form adventitious roots from the interstitial meristems of internodes (with subsequent planting of seedlings); Micropropagation systems (MP) – micropropagation with adaptation of regenerated plants to open ground conditions in specialized greenhouses. Cultivation of the species M. sacchariflorus is possible in most climate zones of the Russian Federation. In terms of the development strategy of its industrial plantations in the Siberian region and other areas located in the temperate climate zone the classical (based on the division of rhizomes) and micropropagation methods of crop propagation are of greatest interest as a combination of the cheapest (in the first case) and the most productive (in the second) methods. A costly technology “in vitro” is more expedient to be used in the production of highly productive planting material free from infection for the maternal nurseries of the crop, followed by propagation at production sites by dividing rhizomes.
