Abstract. The research aimed to study the cold hardiness potential of three grain sorghum varieties under strictly controlled laboratory conditions. The object of the study was the elite seed material of grain sorghum varieties Slavyanka, Ros and Baiza14 (China). The experimental design included three factors: factor A – variety (Slavyanka, Ros and Baiza14); factor B – environment (germination of seeds on paper and in soil); factor C – temperature (optimal 25 C, taken as control, and reduced to 10 C). The experiment was performed in triplicate. The seeds were germinated in a thermostat, under laboratory conditions, in Petri dishes. Grain sorghum varieties Slavyanka and Baiza 14 activated their growth processes both on paper and in soil at optimal and low temperatures. According to the length of seedlings, they were classified as weakly cold-resistant, since the depression of seedlings on paper (Slavyanka – 91.3%, Baiza 14 – 88.9%) and in the soil (Slavyanka – 95.5%, Baiza 14 – 94.6% ) exceeded 70%. In terms of germination under sterile conditions on paper at a temperature of 10 C, the tested varieties could be classified as cold-resistant, in the Slavyanka variety it was 93.3%, Ros – 94.0% and Baiza 14 – 87.0%. Therefore, they can be used in practical breeding as donors of cold resistance when breeding new varieties that are resistant to low temperatures in the early stages of plant development.
