Abstract. The research aimed to identify varieties of spring barley resistant to different-quality (chloride, sulphate, carbonate) salinity. The object of the study was the original seeds of spring barley varieties Povolzhsky 65, Povolzhsky 22 and Povolzhsky yantar' harvested in 2021. To simulate salinity conditions, NaCl, Na2SO4, and Na2CO3 solutions with an osmotic pressure of 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0, 12.5 atmospheres were used, which corresponds to a concentration of 0.05 mol/l to 0.25 mol/l (in 0.05 increments) of chloride, sulphate and sodium bicarbonate; control – distilled water. For the study, intact, levelled seeds of each spring barley variety were selected in the amount of 100 pcs. The experiment was carried out in four biological replications. The evaluation was carried out according to a set of parameters: germination, number of roots, root and shoot length, root and shoot biomass, root and shoot length index. The highest seed germination (19-96%) for all types of salinity was observed in the Povolzhsky 65 variety. It was the least sensitive in the early stages of plant development to the negative effects of chloride salinity up to 12.5 atm. (root length index – 0.47, shoot length index – 0.27), carbonate up to 7.5 atm. (root length index – 0.16, shoot length index – 0.21), sulphate up to 5.0 atm. (root length index – 0.33, shoot length index – 0.51) and was potentially more salt tolerant. The Povolzhsky yantar' variety turned out to be more salt-resistant to the carbonate type of salinity with a solution concentration of up to 10.0 atmospheres (root and shoot length index – 0.16). These varieties can serve as a promising source material for the development of highly productive spring barley varieties resistant to salinity of different quality.
